There I was. Sitting in front of the microphone crying my eyes out. Not very rock ‘n’ roll at all.
It was the day after my son’s 13th birthday and his becoming a teenager inspired a song that came together pretty quickly.
Just a few reflective thoughts about how fast they grow up and all of that.
But I became a complete wreck when it came time to record the vocals.
You see, we had a swing set that broke during the birthday party. The swing was built when he was born and I spent a lot time pushing it back and forth. Both of us giggling our asses off. Everyday after work. Him yelling “Again. Again!”
The backyard was our whole world. We were buddies. We still are, but it’s defintely not the same.
Happiness and pride were accompanied by a strange sense of loss that day. It felt strange because he’s a great kid and everything is as it should be.
But cleaning up that broken swing set closed a chapter in both of our lives that we’re never going to get back.
The day-to-day of being a parent (or a child) can get so routine that it’s hard to remember it is all temporary.
Music has a special way of highlighting how precious every moment is. Uncovering emotions. Raising questions. Hinting at answers.
Since releasing that song life’s become an adventure in being on the lookout for those moments where meaning peeks its lovely head out and reminds me what it’s all about.
It’s amazing how often it happens when you take the time to look.
